NOLA – New Orleans
This years APPA Conference was in New Orleans and I was lucky enough to get to attend with my co-workers. If you don’t know much about New Orleans (I knew nothing before going, except that it is on the TV show The Originals). NOLA is what the locals call it. It is a pretty and crazy place to visit.
It is VERY different from Utah.
I didn’t know what to expect, all I had to go off of was Mardi Gras stories. All I can say now is that my dream of going to New Orleans for Mardi Gras is gone! Just being there on a Saturday to a Wednesday was enough for me. The streets are small and crowded, I couldn’t imagine them around Mardi Gras… No worries though, beads are still given out, I’m pretty sure year round, but not in a Mardi Gras kind of way if you know what I mean. You can flash if you want to get them from strangers on the street or the shop owners just hand them out for fun.
But Mardi Gras stories didn’t prepare me on what to pack… Of course the first thing I did was google the weather a couple days before leaving to see what outfits I should bring. I had to pack my pencil skirts and heels for the morning meetings but the nights were free and I didn’t know what to wear! The weather forecast was similar to Florida’s forecast, hot and humid with some rain showers here and there. Good news is that it only rained one day we were there and I did pack an umbrella, which I highly recommend! It came in handy on that day. The whole time I was there I wore shorts or dresses. The humidity is real there. You sweat no matter what you are wearing, from the moment you wake up to the moment you get in the nice cool shower before bed. I made the mistake of leaving my hair down on the first night out on the town… The rest of the time it was in an updo the rest of the time.
Walking shoes are a must have! Everything is in walking distance or you can take the trolley or car taxi/bike taxi. I suggest walking as much as possible, the sites are amazing. All the buildings and side streets are worth checking out. Plus there is music EVERYWHERE, all types of music too!
The first night and pretty much a majority of our nights were spent on Bourbon Street. It is definitely the place to go at night, during the day it’s not as fun but everything is still open. You can bar hop all the way down the street, but be warned that it gets smelly pretty fast. The town is smelly as is, but at night the stench is real. I was told that before I left and was expecting to be holding my breath everywhere I went, but it wasn’t that bad! Just certain spots and every now and then you’ll get a whiff of a gross smell.
Bourbon Street is in the French Quarter, where my co-workers and I spent most of the trip. The buildings are AMAZING, the beignets are to die for (we ate them pretty much everyday for breakfast), the bars were all completely different from one another and the voodoo shops are too cool to pass up. The two streets you must walk down are Bourbon Street and Frenchmen Street. Bourbon is the party street and Frenchmen in the quiet jazz street. Two completely different feels and only a few blocks away from each other, it’s crazy to see!
The restaurants and food there are all amazing. If you know Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” then you know New Orleans is famous for it’s beignets. There are a couple places that sell them but the number one place to get beignets is Café Du Monde. They only except cash so be prepared! The number one drink there is called a Hurricane (alcoholic). Every bar sells them, yet I don’t think I had the same one twice. The people and workers there are all super friendly and nice. I didn’t feel scared at all there (by that I mean the whole “keep your wallet in your front pocket” saying didn’t seam relevant).
Some people went on a Swamp Tour and they said the gators and swamp are definitely worth seeing. Others went on a plantation tour and said the houses were like something out of a movie. They were gorgeous and they said they would love to go on another plantation tour. There are many plantations to visit and see. I got to see the cool cemeteries they have. They are miles and miles long and they are all mausoleum type cemeteries.
The hotel was at was right by the River Walk along the Mississippi River. The paddle boats went up and down the river and blew their horns, it is very interesting to watch them take off. A different cruise ship was docked right up the river everyday! We were definitely in the right area for tourism.
Like I said, New Orleans is nothing like Slat Lake City. They are completely different from one an other. Between the buildings and the liquor laws (in New Orleans anything in a plastic cup can be drank in public on the streets). The feel of each city was very different, New Orleans is a very friendly and loud place. Salt Lake is more quiet and not so much the party scene.
If you do plan a trip to New Orleans make sure you do the following:
- Check the weather prior and pack an umbrella if needed!
- Get beignets. From Café Du Monde if possible. The line gets really long, but it goes by fast.
- Walk around the French Quarter (Bourbon Street and Frenchmen Street) – Preferably at night!
- Take a tour of some kind –
- Swamp
- Planation
- River Boat
- Cemetery

Why is Cruising the Caribbean a Good Way to Travel?
Bare with me while I get my “blogging legs,” and get more posts uploaded.
Why is cruising the way to go for if you are planning a vacation?
1.) The Total Is Not All Due Upfront
We went on a Norwegian cruise and the great thing about cruises is that the total budget is not due until a month or so before the actual cruise. Which means, if you plan a cruise a year out then you can pay it off gradually. You can plan out your excursions ahead of time. It makes budgeting nice and easy!
2.) Packages That Work Specifically For You
Some cruises have all inclusive packages including food and drinks (yes, even alcoholic drinks are included!) They also have photo packages. On cruise ships they have photographers that take your photos (if you want them to) and they get printed out for you to look at the photo station. I highly suggest buying a photo package. We didn’t at first but by the end of the cruise our fold had a bunch of photos that I absolutely loved and I ended up buying a photo package for 10 printed photos plus a flash drive of all of them. Other packages include Wifi, bottled water, diapers and other things. On the cruise we took we got to pick two packages after booking our room.
3.) Great Way To Travel
Cruising is a great way to see multiple beaches/islands instead of staying on the same beach for a week. On our cruise we left out of Miami and went to Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel and Key West. We spent two days at sea. The days at sea were just as fun as the days on land. We went on this cruise for my 21st birthday celebration, so we got to try ALL the drinks we wanted. They had plenty of activities that went on everyday so you were never bored.I attempted to make my first travel video after using the GoPro to take a bunch of different videos during our vacation. I wasn’t planning on making a video (because I am more a picture gal) but after seeing everyone post travel videos I decide to try it. All I can say is that next time it’ll be better…

10 Must Go To Hot Springs
1) Meadow Hot Springs
– This one was my favorite by far, that is until it ended up on the internet… Now it isn’t as nice as it was and there are people there nonstop. It is always one of our stops when road tripping though. Last time we went it was a spontaneous road trip at 12:00am and we ended up getting there at 3:00am. We spent the night at one of the properties that my boyfriend’s family has in Richfield, Utah and then drove back that afternoon. We of course took Millie (our, at the time, 13 week old puppy) and put her on a long line leash by the springs while we swam around for a few hours. There were people just leaving when we got there (I am not kidding when I say people are there nonstop now) they let us keep their fire going and glow sticks they had left over to swim around with. We have been to Meadow Hot Springs at least 5 different times, if not more. I recommend going at night rather than the daytime, since people and their whole families take day trips there and camp out.2) Paradise Valley, Nevada
– This one is literally in the middle of no where. There wasn’t a soul for miles (which I love!). There are two different “tubs,” which are cattle troughs. There is a little stream that has been rigged up to flow into a hose that you can control and pick which tub you want to sit in. Also, if it gets too hot you can take the hose out and let it cool down before putting it back in. When we went, it looked like there were brand new tubs. So you know it is taken care of.3) Gandy Hot Spring
– Ok, this is more of a “warming springs,” but it is super cool! There is a cave inside the rock that in amazing. There were a couple other people there, but it wasn’t busy at all. (Side note: this is where Millie learned to swim. It was her first hot springs trip, and she LOVED it)4) Ruby Valley
– This one there wasn’t anyone around for miles as well. Although, there was a truck that ended up driving by (a local couple that drove there just because they could). They ended up getting their truck stuck in the mud pretty bad. We have gotten my Jeep stuck a few times and finally got to return the favor to all of those that helped us out. After our soak in the hot springs, they came up and asked for help.5) Crystal Hot Spring
-This is a more popular hot springs. It is one you must pay to get in. It is more of a park. There is an RV park right by it so you can stay a while. There are water slides, lounging chairs and a club house with vending machines. It is kind of like your local rec. center pool.6) Lava Hot Spring
– This one is also a more popular hot springs. We mostly tube the river when we go, rather than chill in the hot springs them selves. It is a fun little get away. Hotels everywhere, stores/shops and more. Everything is in walking distance.7) Midway Creator
– This is one you have to pay and schedule a time to go. The first time we went we used Groupon to get a discount. It is mostly just a soaking tub. It looks cool when you go in, since it is inside a creator. You have to wear a lifejacket the whole time you are in the water (and I hate lifejackets…) But if you do go, I suggest bringing your own lifejacket so that you know it will fit comfortably.
8) 12 Mile Hot Spring
– We went to this one and camped out right in the area of the springs with some friends. There is a cool-ish river that you can lay in right out side the springs if you get too hot so that you can cool down. It was nice, that is until 2:00am – 5:00 am. There were people coming and partying nonstop. Loud and rowdy drunk people aren’t my cup of tea when they are partying for three hours straight. Other than that, it is a pretty good hot spring.
9) Little Jamaica
– This one is crowded, and I mean CROWDED, every time we go. It is a little spot in St George with different pools to soak in and a big river. It is very family friendly. Everyone there is with what seems like extended family and their dogs. If you do end up finding a place to sit or some people to chill with then it is nice to hangout and swim around.10) Baker Hot Spring
– Ok, so this one we didn’t get to actually get in. We drove up and there was a nudist group camping out there. I am talking old people, nude as could be and lots of them. It would have been a cool hot springs and I do recommend going, I know we will be back to actually try it out sometime. It must be good if people camp there with their trailers and all.Keep Finding Adventure,
